Do environmentally-friendly cocoa farms yield social and economic co-benefits?

Downstream companies in chocolate supply chains are increasingly engaged improving the sustainability of cocoa production, which requires a multidimensional understanding farms' performance. However, prior research has insufficiently addressed multiple dimensions production or interrelationships between dimensions. This study explores farm using our comprehensive data set 395 farms Ecuador and Uganda identifies social economic co-benefits trade-offs environmentally-friendly production. For this, were grouped according to environmental performance then compared. approach revealed lowest governance dimension. We identified important regarding human health benefits from reduced pesticide use resource conservation for long-term productivity, although at expense investments profitability. Future interventions require approaches that target underrepresented issues enable synergistic effects environmental, social, farms.
